The hot hatch market is just warming up in the Indian market and car makers are looking at this segment with more seriousness. Volkswagen did get the Polo GT with seven speed dual clutch automatic transmission and Fiat launched the true hot hatch Abarth Punto. With focus on the performance and premium segments, Volkswagen is set to bring in the high performance Polo GTI to India.

The Polo GTI was unveiled at the ongoing 2016 Auto Expo.

In terms of styling to the exterior the Polo GTI gets unmistakable red GTI insignia, GTI badges on the front honeycomb mesh grille, LED headlights with day time running lights, new sportier front and rear bumpers with bigger air intake, red brake callipers, dark red tail light clusters, rear roof spoiler, sunroof, sporty side skirts, and twin exposed tailpipes.

The interior has many and nice touches exclusive to the GTI. The dashboard gets an all black treatment while the centre console which houses the infotainment system and climate control receives a high end piano black treatment. The Golf inspired seat fabric and bucket type front seats with arm rest and centre storage box further add to the sporty feel. The Polo GTI also gets aluminium pedals for a sportier feel.

Power for this hot hatch comes from a 1.8 litre four cylinder TSI engine producing a staggering 141 KW (192 PS) of raw power and 320 nm of torque, mated to a 7 speed DSG gearbox enough to do 0 – 100 in a whopping 7 seconds flat and has a top speed of 236 kmph. The Polo GTI also gets ABS, ESP and hill hold assist function as standard safety features.

‘’We want to keep it very pure; a hot hatch that offers performance, technology and comfort. I know that there is a compromise here, but people who buy this car, which is fairly costly car, will have other cars in the garage to load five people on a regular basis,’’ Michael Mayer, director, VW passenger cars.
