Tata Kite 5 sedan to be called Viago or Altigo, launch in 2017

Tata Kite 5 to be launched in 2017, most likely in Q1 FY 2017-2018.

Tata Motors which has moved up to the 4th rank plans to launch the new big volume brand the Kite 5 in the Indian market in 2017. We expect the car to be launched in Q1 FY 2017-2018.

The big question – What will be the car known as?

According to rumours, Tata Motors wanted to end the name of the compact sedan with ‘go’, in line with the Tiago hatchback. The other name that has been shortlisted is Tata Tigor.

Tata Motors had registered the names Zica for the hatchback and Sway for its upcoming sedan during the development cycle for Kite 4 & Kite 5. The Zica was later renamed to Tiago after the Zika virus outbreak hit several countries. The company has not yet released any official statement about the name of the Kite 5.

Tata’s Tiago success has incited Kite 5 to be called Viago or Altigo and the company which needs another Tiago success definitely could use these badges.

The names previously rumoured for the Kite 5 were Sway, Dribble, Canvas and Ingrid.

Tata Motors showcased the Kite 5 compact sedan at the 2016 Auto Expo and the car looks one of the best compact sedan compared to the current models available in the market.

The Kite 5 is based on the same on the Tiago and measures 3,995mm in length, 1,647mm in width and 1,535mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,450mm. Styling on the front is similar to the Tiago which express the new Imapct design language. The car features dual chamber headlamps, for lamps and black grille with new 3D Tata Logo.

On the inside the car will feature dual tone interiors, five-inch touchscreen infotainment system with USB, aux and Bluetooth connectivity and eight-speaker sound system.

On the safety front, the compact sedan is expected to come equipped with dual airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and corner stability control (CSC).

Under the hood, Kite 5 will the borrow 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and 1.05-litre three-cylinder diesel motor from the Tiago. Both engines will be available with multi-drive modes — Eco and City. The company has been testing the car and we have been told the fuel efficiency of the Kite 5 could be higher than the Tiago.

The Kite 5 or Viago or Altigo will be priced very aggressively and will be available in XE, XM, XT, XZ variants.
